What is Cisco Discovery Protocol? - Benifits and Features of CDP.

What is CDP? – Cisco Discovery Protocol?

The Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) is developed by Cisco to share information about other directly connected Cisco devices, such as the operating system version and IP address.
CDP protocol is a Cisco proprietary Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) network protocol. Through the CDP, administrator can gather hardware and protocol information about neighbor devices.

CDP protocol is default-enabled on all Cisco devices including routers and switches and runs on all LAN and WAN media that support Sub network Access Protocol (SNAP).

Cisco Discovery Protocol

Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) messages received from a neighbor Cisco device are not forwarded to any other devices by default. It means that Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) is passed only to directly connected Cisco devices. Each Cisco device (which supports Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP)) stores the messages received from neighbor devices in a table that can be viewed using the show cdp neighbors command.

Cisco devices send Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) messages to the multicast destination address 01:00:0C:CC:CC:CC. CDP messages are sent every 60 seconds on interfaces that support Subnetwork Access Protocol (SNAP) headers. The support for Subnetwork Access Protocol (SNAP) is not available with every data link layer media type. The media types which are supported for Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) are Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, PPP, HDLC, ATM, and Frame Relay.

CDP – Cisco Discovery protocol contains below information

  • Device Name
  • IOS Software Version
  • Routing and Switching capabilities
  • Hardware Platform details
  • IP Address of the Device
  • Interface details which is generated the CDP message

Benefits and features of Cisco Discovery Protocol

  • It’s allow to use of different network layer protocols and the real-time transport protocol to discover devices and how they are configured.
  • Enabling the discovery of the IP address of a misconfigured router or switch on the other side of a WAN link.
  • Assisting with troubleshooting Type-Length-Value (TLV) fields.
While Cisco Discovery Protocol should be enabled on all routers if you need to enable Cisco routers, use the router then Go to the below path,
(config) # cdp run command.
If you simply want to see the CDP configuration, use the router
(config) # show cdp command.
CDP also works in an EXOS virtual machine environment that is running VMware. CDP not only allows you to determine which Cisco port is connected to a certain vSwitch, but to view properties of the Cisco switch such as the software version and device ID. While the CDP Version 1 prohibits native VLAN information to pass between Cisco switches, Version 2 can pass native VLAN information.

What is STP? - Explain Advantages and Disadvantages

The Spanning Tree Protocol is a network protocol that builds a loop-free logical topology for Ethernet networks. The basic function of STP is to prevent bridge loops and the broadcast radiation that results from them. STP is a protocol. It actively monitors all links of the network. To finds a redundant link, it uses an algorithm, known as the STA (spanning-tree algorithm). The STA algorithm first creates a topology database then it finds and disables the redundant links. Once redundant links are disabled, only the STP-chosen links remain active. If a new link is added or an existing link is removed, the STP re-runs the STA algorithm and re-adjusts all links to reflect the change. STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) automatically removes layer 2 switching loops by shutting down the redundant links. A redundant link is an additional link between two switches. A redundant link is usually created for backup purposes. Just like every coin has two sides, a redundant link, along with

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of TCP/UDP ?? Difference between TCP and UDP

As in previous blog we have define and explain about what is TCP and UDP and from now we are moving ahead with Advantages, Disadvantages and Difference of TCP and UDP but for this you have to know about TCP and UDP hence to understand it go for a What is TCP and UDP . Advantage of TCP Here, are pros/benefits of TCP: It helps you to establish/set up a connection between different types of computers. It operates independently of the operating system. It supports many routing-protocols. It enables the internetworking between the organizations. TCP/IP model has a highly scalable client-server architecture. It can be operated independently. Supports several routing protocols. It can be used to establish a connection between two computers. Disadvantages of TCP Here, are disadvantage of using TCP: TCP never conclude a transmission without all data in motion being explicitly asked. You can't use for broadcast or multicast transmission. TCP has no block boundaries, so you
